Why do I need this when I can just boil water?
Boiling works, but it is not practical in most emergencies. It needs fuel, a heat source, a container and time, resources you may not have when seconds count. The Oasis Straw gives you safe drinking water the moment you need it, with zero setup. And boiling does not remove physical contaminants or microplastics. Our 4 stage filtration does.
What exactly does the 0.1 micron filtration remove?
The hollow fiber membrane removes 99.999999% of bacteria including E. coli, Salmonella, Cholera and Typhoid, 99.999% of parasites including Giardia and Cryptosporidium, 99.999% of microplastics, plus dirt, sediment and turbidity. The activated carbon stage also reduces chlorine and bad taste and odors.
Will it expire if I just keep it in my emergency kit?
No. Stored dry, there is no shelf life or expiration date at all. It can sit in your emergency bag, vehicle or home for decades and work perfectly the moment you need it. Just keep it in a cool, dry place. If you have used it, let it fully air dry before storage.
How many should I buy for my family?
We recommend the prepper principle: two is one, one is none. For a family of four or five, the minimum is one straw each, and two per person is ideal so everyone can drink at the same time from one water source, with backup.
Can my kids use it?
The straw requires moderate suction, so it works well for kids ages 5 and up. For younger children, use the squeeze bag to filter water directly into their bottles. The system is designed to work multiple ways for exactly this reason.
I live in the city or suburbs. Do I really need this?
Urban and suburban families are often at higher risk, because you are fully dependent on infrastructure that can fail instantly. Flint, the Texas freeze in 2021, boil water advisories and hurricanes all left city households with nothing coming out of the tap. Rural folks have wells and streams. City dwellers have faucets that only work while the system works.
How do I clean and maintain it?
Every 25 to 50 gallons, or when the flow rate slows, backflush the filter with the included syringe. Fill it with clean filtered water, attach it to the outflow end and flush backwards 3 to 5 times. That ejects trapped particles and restores the flow rate to like new. Between uses, shake out excess water and air dry before storage.
